Honorable Mention true love in a six-legged world alan addotto Sexualis insectiva This morning As I was drinking my first coffee A preying mantis Big, long and green Decided to do that back and forth boogie dance That they do when they walk Right up my window screen This is true. not some high fa-lutin’ metaphor or one of those poetry things. I watched her progress as she went chugga boom, chugga boom. like a drunk stripper from a topless bar out by the airport called “Vince and Pauly’s Bad Boys’ Room” Up she went walking pumping and grinding non-stop two steps forward then one step back from the very bottom to the very top Chugga chugga chugga boom boom boom Looked a whole lot like a sort of buggy tango or really-------- insect sex. Was this some sort of chitinous enticement? for some male I couldn’t see possibly ogling this sassy temptress with the big waggling posterior with some voyeuristic intention from my bay leaf tree? (I could hear him thinking) “Will you just check out that thorax? Va-Va-Va Voom! and those mandibles Wow! She makes me soooooo hot.” The male preying mantis gets as you know, just one chance for sex then gives up his life When a preying mantis female says she wants to have you over for something to eat she is not joking after you get in her you are the main course at dinner.
